What Happens to Juniper in the Mud Ending?
Juniper enjoys Mud. Any doubt we might have had relating to this can be cleared when we view that her distraught over Mud’s break up note. But her love isn’t of the identical strength as Mud’s is.
Mud has no qualms about murdering a guy who educated his beloved Juniper, however, she cannot bring herself to run off with him and devote the rest of her life hiding from the law. She knows that she’s wrong to rope Mud along and therefore tells Ellis to let Mud know she knows why he’s breaking up with her.
Nevertheless, the ultimate decision she makes is different here Juniper chooses to let Mud go instead of holding on to him. She is visibly sad about her decision but the film’s end doesn’t reveal what actually happens with Juniper.
Ellis Anger for Mud?
Everything is changing around him he is growing up and his parents are growing apart. Ellis is entering that period of life when young adults start becoming conscious of the notion of romantic love and one of the very first people they appear, to emulate, is their own parents.
At 14, Ellis is attempting to define love and discover its place in life — can it be wracking such as Mud’s is, or is it a burden for example his parents’ is, or can it be a benefit such as Juniper’s is?
When Ellis gets publicly dumped by the woman he supposes to become his girlfriend, he’s angry and hurt, and he plans that hurt and anger at Mud, who he had taken on as a kind of mentor, charmed by Mud’s unswerving and apparently undying love for Juniper (so different from his parents’, who are all but separated).
So when Ellis discovers that even Mud’s love has its own limits, the disillusionment makes him feel like he has been betrayed by his friend.
Does Tom Love Mud as a Son?
From the initial 10 minutes of the film, it is established that Tom Blankenship, Ellis’s neighbor across the river, is really a loner. Mud confirms that Tom was by himself since his wife died years ago.
Even though he favors his own solitary existence, Tom sacrifices the comforts of the home to conserve Mud and run away with him. Tom says he discovered Mud from the woods for a child, entirely independently, and took him.
Even though it is not mentioned explicitly, it could be assumed that Tom raised Mud and for that reason thinks of him as a kid. Making that big of a decision is beyond the range of just plain friendship and also demonstrates that Tom loves Mud because of his family.
