From the start, the movie builds itself as a comment on contemporary society. It showcases a world where a heinous crime like date rape has become so commonplace that there’s a near-infallible infrastructure in place to protect the accused.

It also dissects the saying”not all men” by demonstrating that the only difference between the so-called alpha males and self-proclaimed”fine guys” is the latter group is not as evident in their actions.

The principal protagonist, Cassandra”Cassie” Thomas (Carey Mulligan), is the person that the name is speaking to, along with her late friend Nina. The two were bright, young girls attending medical school, slated to do good things in life.

But after Nina was raped while being under the influence of alcohol, they both dropped out. Nina died at some point, and Cassie’s life seems to have been captured in limbo. She resides with her parents (Clancy Brown and Jennifer Coolidge), who often drop not-so-subtle hints they want Cassie out of their home and restart her life.

Cassie is still grieving for her friend, whose rapist, Alex”Al” Monroe (Chris Lowell), was never penalized. So, every week, she immerses herself in the nightlife of her town, pretends to be drunk, and waits until a man comes over under the pretext of helping.

However, almost unfailingly, they take her back to their homes and attempts to make the most of her while she looks completely inebriated. It’s then that she makes the men conscious that she is sober, giving them the shock of their lives.

That is her way of atonement for the utter injustice that has been done for her friend. A pediatric doctor now, Ryan says he has always dreamed of feelings for her. They soon start dating.

She learns from him that he’s still in touch with other pupils from medical colleges, such as the ones who were directly involved in Nina’s case. Her first target is Madison (Alison Brie), that had been quite close to Cassie and Nina.

Despite this, she sided with Al, claiming that drunken behavior and promiscuity were ordinary with Nina.

Promising Young Women Ending:

Her third goal is Al’s attorney, Jordan (Alfred Molina). But if Cassie shows up at his home, stating his demeanor has arrived, Jordan readily accepts it. In the intermediate years, he’s come to regret what he did as a lawyer for Al and many others like him.

Seeing what Jordan has become and after a conversation with Nina’s mother, Cassie decides to seek out a normal lifestyle with Ryan. It’s then that Madison gives her video footage of this incident.

Much to her horror, it shows that Ryan was one of the boys that were there throughout the rape. Together with her short hope for normalcy gone, Cassie compels Ryan to tell her Al’s whereabouts. Cassie learns that Al is getting married, and his buddies have thrown him a bachelor party.

Cassie shows up there as a stripper successfully drugs all of his pals, and convinces a reluctant Al to take her into the upstairs bedroom. Once there, she handcuffs him into the bedstand and reveals her identity.

She informs him that she will carve Nina’s name on his body. However, he manages to spare one of his arms and pins her down. In the ensuing tussle, he smothers Cassie to death with a pillow.

Does Cassie Die or Live at the End of Promising Young Women?

He gets a panicking Al calm down before helping him cremate Cassie in secret. The following missing person investigation doesn’t go anywhere. Ryan, seemingly the only person who understood where Cassie was going that night, lies to the cops.

He knows that when he tells the truth about it, that movie will gradually come to light also, jeopardizing his position at his office and in society. This could have been the end of the movie, with Cassie being another casualty of a culture that seems to overwhelmingly support the perpetrator.

It didn’t, since she’d contingency plans. Before going to Al’s bachelor party, she sent an email to Jordan, telling him where she was going and asking him to provide all of the articles of this email to the police if she goes missing.

Following Al’s marriage, the police arrive and arrest him while Ryan receives several scheduled speeches from Cassie. Brilliant as she was, she knew her death was always a possibility when she chose to visit the cottage in which the party was being hosted.

She accepted the risk, even counted on it, so that she could bring justice to the individual who ruined her buddy’s life. Each of her act of retribution is represented with the inclusion of a vertical mark for her tally.

When she arrives in the cottage, it’s only the fourth mark. The flat slash denoting her fifth act of retribution appears after the police arrive at the marriage. As she tells Ryan in the scheduled message, this is the actual ending and signs off for himself and Nina. Her final act of vengeance is quite symbolic also.

Cassie does not wear her part of their center pendant that day, but of Nina’s. When the police find the place where Joe and Al cremated her, then they locate the necklace. This helps them identify her remains, which ultimately contributes to Al’s arrest. In passing, she ensures that Nina has a role to play in punishing her rapist.

Why Did Cassie Visit the Bachelor Party in Promising Young Women?

Following Nina’s departure, Cassie removed himself from the world at large. With no real ambition and enthusiasm in her own life, she has become the husk of what she used to be. Her sole source of enjoyment nowadays seems to be tormenting the potential rapists.

This changes when Ryan walks back into her life. His ridiculous inoffensiveness, combined with the gentle tenacity with which he pursues her, ultimately wins her over. Cassie genuinely feels helpless if Ryan sees her during one of her nightly excursions.

It is not because she is ashamed, but because she believes she has wronged him. Her conversation with Jordan leaves her deeply disturbed. When she moves to speak to Nina’s mother, the elderly girl urges her to live her life.

Standing at that significant juncture of her life, Cassie chooses to trust again. They return, and she introduces him to her parents, who, in turn, start to trust him as well. The revelation which Ryan was there during the episode rests on Cassie’s past repair. The shock and heartbreak she experiences, there’s not any coming back from that.

When she confronts him, he offers the tired, old response that he was”just a kid.” After that, it becomes rather easy for her to blackmail him into revealing to her the location of the cottage in which Al’s bachelor party will be hosted.
