Carolina the Conjuring was filmed in North Carolina, notably in Willington and Curry. Since the film’s story is set in 1971, director James Wan wanted to recreate the spirit of the 1970s horror film.

Principal photography began in late February 2012 and concluded on April 26, 2012. The scenes were shot in chronological order. Let us take you through the details!

  • Wilmington, North Carolina

Port City of Wilmington AK “Hollywood East” is the film’s primary filming location. Indoor scenes in the film were shot at the European Union / Screen Gems Studios.

The studio is located at 1223 N. 23rd Street and sits on 50 acres. It offers ten stages with a production space of 250,000 sq ft. Notable credits from the studio include ‘One Tree Hill,’ ‘Iron Man 3,’ and ‘Swamp Thing.’

For ‘The Conjuring’, a replica of the Peron home (which was filmed in Curry) was produced on a sound stage for the feature.

Production designers included the tiniest details of the house, such as uneven wooden slats in the porch, and even repairs made over the years. Wilmington, a small part of the University of North Carolina, also starred in the film.

Filming was done during Spring Break in March 2012. Father Gordon’s church in the movie is located at 411 Market Street. Other filming locations in Wilmington are Carolina Apartments, Kenan Memorial Fountain, and Carolinian Inn.

  • Curry, North Carolina

The production team scrutinized several properties before reaching the void used as the home of the Peron family in the film. The property, located at 405 Canetuck Road, was used for outdoor shots only.

The Kali River home in Pender County spans over 5000 sq ft and has two stories, with narrow staircases and low ceilings. The structure of the building is almost a hundred years old. It seems like this place has a rich history of its own!

The famous 50-foot tall oak tree was built by the production team just for the film and was torn down after filming. The prop tree weighed about four tons. You may find it scary and interesting that many inexplicable incidents occurred during the making of the film.

For example, when the real Peron family visited the Curry house, they realized a sudden stroke of cold air, which could not shake or shake any leaves or trees.
