The story dates back three decades to the original. Akeem now has three daughters, but no sons who can entrust his throne. His dying father, King Jaffa Joffar (James Earl Jones), tells him of a bastard son he imagined during a drug-aided one-night stand in Queens, New York.
And he left for America to bring back his son LaValle (Jermaine Fowler). Lavelle was initially happy with the benefits that come with being a prince, soon becomes disenchanted with the whole thing and wants to go back to his old life.
Meanwhile, Akeem’s eldest daughter, Princess Micah Joffar (Kiki Layne) is a capable young woman who wants to become a queen, but Zamunda’s traditions suggest that only men can be emperors.

LaValle was raised by his mother Mary Jansson, he is his father’s son – rebellious and unswerving. But unlike Akeem, who willingly renounced his majestic ways to seek true love, Lavelle has no idea how to act like one.

Lavelle undergoes three tests to prove his worthiness. First, he is taught to walk and act like royalty. His father himself teaches him. Tired of the trials and after consulting Mirembe, LaValle called her uncle from Queens.
His uncle proves to be very helpful in these exams and accompanies him all the time. His second test is to take a mustache out of a lion while he is resting. LaValle is scared to do this test.

However, her half-sister Micah comes to her rescue and convinces her that perhaps the test is not just about courage but also the use of mind. With its help, Lavelle also succeeds in this examination.
The third and final test tests her courage. He is fooled by the false excuse that he has to undergo traditional circumcision. What he does not know is that it is a mask. They are just testing his courage.
Realizing that he is more genuinely in love with Mirembe, he goes to talk to her and then turns to Akeem. When he finds his father, he overhears Izzy talking to him that he has used LaValle as a pawn in his game, and now everyone will benefit from marrying Bopoto.
LaValle finds Mirambe, Mary, and Reem aboard the royal jet and goes back to Queens. When Izzy demands marriage the next day, Semi alerts Akeem, which further complicates matters.
Akeem tells a drunken Lisa about the situation with LaValle, leading to an argument where she sends him out. He turns to McDowells and talks to Cleo about the father’s duties, not only from LaValle but also Micah and his sisters.
After pondering what his late mother wanted, it leads him to find Lavelle to set things right.
This is still a fitting send-off that the original Cumming to America ended on a not-intentionally great joke from Saul, who was revealed to be Murphy under a pound of makeup and prosthetics.
