Small-town stoner Mike Howell spends most of his time getting high and writing a graphic novel about a superhero monkey. What Mike doesn’t know is that he was trained by the CIA to be a deadly killing machine.
When the agency targets him for termination, his former handler activates his covert skills, turning the mild-mannered slacker into a lethal weapon. Now, utterly shocked, Mike must use his newfound abilities to save himself and his girlfriend from smoking.
American Ultra Ending Explained: Do he know about his past?
At the home of drug dealer Rose, Mike learns that he has had some military training. But before landing in Liman and meeting Phoebe, they can’t remember where they came from or any past.
Yates’ men charge with lethal gas and drive away Rose and her men. Phoebe, meanwhile, kills the attackers and tells Mike what the gas can do. They leave, and Mike questions Phoebe about what happened.
He learns that Phoebe was another CIA agent assigned to look after him. Phoebe grabs the mic and takes him out. She kills the agent who lets the gas in and takes an antidote from it, then injects it into Mike.
He feels sleepy but Phoebe warns him that he will die if he slips. Mike then sees nothing but his time with Phoebe as she begs him to wake him. He nods and is fine but asks Phoebe how he knew what gas was.
She then admits that she is the CIA and has been handled for the past five years. Betrayed, Mike retreats to his car. She runs there with him, and the car is hit by Laffer, who was driving in a large vehicle. The car fell on the bridge.
Laughter grabs Phoebe and pours gas into the whole car. Victoria shows up and takes the mic out before the laughter burns it and detonates the car. He takes Phoebe back to Yates. At the home of drug dealer Rose, Mike learns that he has military training.
But before landing in Lyman and meeting Phoebe, he can’t remember where these came from or anything from his past. By then, Yates’ men attacked with lethal gas and took out Rose and her men.
Meanwhile, Phoebe kills the attackers and tells Mike what the gas can do. They leave and Mike asks Phoebe what happened. He learns that Phoebe was another CIA agent who had to take care of him.
As a result his criminal record will be erased and his memory will be erased. On the other hand, Lasseter rescues Mike and tells him about his past. She tells him that he was a criminal who voluntarily joined their Wiseman program.
Phoebe was tasked with making sure he would be a good man, but eventually, she fell for him and wanted to be with him forever. Panic attacks were set up to ensure that he never left the city, no matter what.

American Ultra Review: Is this movie worth a watch?
American Ultra is the best of small spurts: a scene where Mike considers proposing to Phoebe at the worst possible opportunity; An unexpected heartfelt exchange between Mike and the CIA’s best killer (Walton Goggins).
A specialist action set piece in the middle of a superstore like Walmart. The violence can be shockingly bloody — sometimes hilariously — and often the stoner humor turns tedious, especially when John Leguizamo shows up to play Mike’s stereotypically awkward drug dealer.
But the lasting impression that comes from watching American Ultra is that Nourizadeh and Landis throw a lot of styles and vocals into a blender to see what comes out. This cinematic drink isn’t particularly good, but it definitely has some kick.
