Hellbound Season 1 Ending Explained: What happens with Dongwook?
A major turning point in the Hellbound season finale is that the person who has cast Hyejin, Yangbe, Sonhyun, and Tuffy is Lee Dongwook, who is responsible for the pre-time jump of the Yale-y Arrowhead Livestream.
We learn through narration and flashbacks that Dongwook stopped his broadcast after a performance, stating that he would die in three years. The declaration seriously challenged Dongwook’s belief system.
Previously, he lived according to the doctrine of the New Truth and believed that “sinners” should be punished. Although the performance shakes their faith, Dongwook rebels when Toffee,
and Co. Showing up at his door, ready to dive back into the crazy, power-driven system he was once an impressive part of. He calls on Chairman Jongchil and the New Truth Committee to confirm what he already believes to be true:
He is the Messiah, and God has given him a special mission. It turns out that the time of Dongwook’s performance is only five minutes after Toffee, so he plans to see if the newborn decree video was fake, and that he is the only god who was coming that day.
It’s not exactly a foolproof plan, but it does give the New Truth leadership a lead in where they might be able to find Tuffy, and it gives Dongwook a sense of purpose and meaning for both his life and death that he wants very hard.
Time to go back to that betrayal. When Dongwook called the leaders of the New Truth and told them whom he was sheltering, they told him that God had made a mistake.
This child was never to die, and the performance of Dongwook, which was to take place five minutes after the child, was supposed to hide God’s mistake. Once a narcissist, Dongwook took the BS explanation at face value and embraced his new role as the messiah.
So Dongwook tried to assassinate Young-jae. He did not want another man to interfere in his fate. Young-jae was fighting Dongwook as So-hyun fled from creatures bent on killing his child.
While both the New Truth Society and Arrowhead try to find the condemned child, they are not able to intervene in time. Bae Young-jae and Song So-hyun bring their child to the courtyard of an apartment building and ask the residents to watch the child being taken to Hell.
However, neither parent can face the fear of seeing their child tormented and killed when the demons actually do come. They hug the infant in their middle as the demons descend and when the family is shaken, both parents are burned, but the child is not harmed.
This is a very profound moment because until now, we have never seen a case where the decree has not been fulfilled. It’s not lost on the character known as Skull Mask, a highly enthusiastic live-streamer who serves as Arrowhead’s de facto leader.

He arrives at the scene after receiving orders that he will be taken to Hell immediately after the child, which he interprets as meaning that he has been chosen by God to correct an error when He had condemned the child.
When he sees that the child is still alive, he is confused and tries to kill her. But Min Hae-jin manages to keep the skull mask off until the demons come and take him to Hell.
If that wasn’t enough, it is soon revealed that Dongwook is actually Arrowhead’s skull mask guy. It reveals who he is, but not how he associated himself with Hye-jin.
Tracking his signal, Deacon Yu-ji takes off with his followers and locates Hye-jin’s parked car. However, Dongwook appears to be drawn to them and kills several guards.
After frenzied laughter to Dongwook, Youngjae lowers his head and notices bodies on the floor, now disguised in his skull mask get-up. He intends to kill Hye-jin, Youngjae, and So-Hyun, which raises the big question of why exactly they trusted him.
Anyway, after knocking out Youngjae, he runs back into the room and runs at the pair. Hye-jin however is drawn to him and as he runs into the room begins beating the boy with a ditch.
