Tick, tick… BOOM! (Style as Tick, Tick… Boom!) is a 2021 American biographical musical drama film directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Steven Levenson, which is based on the same name.

Tick, tick… BOOM! It had its world premiere at AFI Fest on November 10, 2021, and began limited theatrical release on November 12, 2021, before streaming on Netflix on November 19, 2021.

Tick, tick… BOOM! At the beginning of the year, Andrew Garfield’s character Jonathan introduces himself, and the narrator claims that the successful events are true, except for the parts he made up.

The main conflict of the film lies in the emotional turmoil of John’s impending 30th birthday. He’s spent the past eight years working on his dystopian science-fiction musical Superbia,

And while it received a workshop at Playwrights Horizons, as depicted in the film, no one has expressed their interest in making it. This despair makes him tick, tick… BOOM! to the pen, but in real life, music is a monologue.

Meanwhile, the version featured in the film is an already modified three-actor piece, created by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Auburn shortly after Larson’s death in 1996. We know that Lin-Manuel Miranda can have a bit of an acquired taste when it comes to his musical style.

Since it is based on Larsen’s work, it is not in Another Hamilton or Heights, however. Miranda starred in a revival of the musical in 2014, and she let Larson’s talent do the talking instead of adding her own spin to the proceedings.

Broadway fans will be pleased with Miranda’s involvement, however, as there is a special number that surpasses the MCU in terms of cameos.

It’s a delightfully self-indulgent sequence that will delight anyone with a love of music, and it’s hard to believe that anyone other than Miranda could pull it all together.

Tick, tick… BOOM! In the final moments of the episode, Jonathan is seen performing his final song, where he looks at the audience and acknowledges his friends and family while Susan watches him from behind.

The end credits of the movie Roll-In and actual footage of Jonathan Larson are played out as he plays ticks, ticks… booms.
