Riverdale Season 5 Ending Explained: What happens with Archie & Betty?
The scene cuts to Hiram in a car, counting down the seconds until the bomb detonates. Once the time was up, he walked out of Riverdale with a smile on his face. The camera then panned on an overview of the city, showing smoke and fire emanating from a building.
It would be extremely risky and alienating for die-hard Barchi fans if Betty and Archie were smitten just like they had finally committed to each other after several seasons of longing.

The Blossoms are all about making sure the public’s perception of the family is clean, especially since the family runs a Blossom maple syrup farm, so it should come as no surprise that Nana Rose was eager to clear the scandal under the rug.
Starkweather’s surroundings didn’t make it the best place to raise the kids, and they created the Mothmen legend to ensure that the citizens of Riverdale didn’t come looking for them.
Their isolated homemade survival was difficult, and Starkweather began robbing passersby on the Lonely Highway—but his time in the woods left him twisted and rotten.
Eventually, he started hunting women for sport, and unfortunately, Polly Cooper was one of those women. Jughead learns that Old Man Dreyfus is his killer because the Mothmen’s corpse has been discovered by the gang to contain Blossom’s DNA,
And the shadowy caretaker knows a lot about the Mothmen. In the palladium mines, Cheryl and Britta (Kyra Leroux) stumble upon something disturbing – the bones of several humans.
They report to Nana Rose Blossom (Barbara Wallace) who spills the beans on another dark family heirloom that reveals centuries of bad blood for Riverdale.
Per Nana Blossom, Cheryl’s ancestor Abigail Blossom was accused of witchcraft and burned alive in the 1800s by the predecessors of Archie, Jughead, and Betty.
It is readily apparent that Gholi was acting on Hiram’s behalf, but Tony and Fang go to all the old-school serpents to confirm it.
Betty and Sheriff Keller then arrest Hiram, and here I have a question: Did Archie bring smoke from the fire with him? Because when he knocks on the door of Hiram’s office he is surrounded by smoke.
Betty and Archie then enlist Veronica to help find Hiram’s office and find something on it, but ultimately, it’s Reggie who keeps the “impregnable evidence” in the rain.

Sure, he’s on a jump drive holding said evidence that it’s raining again, but I’m sure everything will be fine. And that way, Veronica and Archie don’t have to kill Hiram as their final act, which was Veronica’s plan! Because nothing says “our romance is over” like hitting your dad together.
And then there’s Cheryl, who finds a bunch of skeletons in the mines. So naturally, this leads us to a Nana Rose story, in which she tells that Cheryl’s ancestor, Abigail Blossom, ran a school for girls in 1819.
When she forbade the townspeople to buy her maple grove to see the palladium, they called her a witch and burned her at the stake. “They” are the ancestors of Archie, Betty, and Jughead.
But as she burns, Abigail curses them, and suddenly, Cheryl’s witch is starting to make sense this season! It seems that, after Abigail’s death, many of the townspeople died while falling in the mines.
Nana Rose hands Abigail’s journal to Cheryl, and she shows up at a Corps Four meeting, where they are trying to determine Riverdale’s governing body, seeking an apology for anything their ancestors did.
Disturbed by this dark history, Cheryl confronts three Riverdale natives engaged to Veronica, and apologizes at the visiting town hall where they will discuss Riverdale’s future.
For now, they all put aside their differences and gather on the outskirts of the city where they exile Hiram so that he doesn’t return to create more chaos, or so they think.
