1883 Season 1 Recap: What happened till now?

The first episode begins with a young white woman who is injured and battered, burning covered wagons, and corpses scattered among Native Americans on horseback.

She is Elsa Dutton, the “pure,” blonde, teenage daughter of James Dutton, the patriarch of the Dutton family, whose adventures are at the center of “Yellowstone”.

Dressed in a brightly colored gown as she has throughout the series, in sharp contrast to the grungier, “darker” surroundings Elsa is, for all intents and purposes, the embodiment of Colombia, itself a landmark of the United States.

Personality is as illustrated. John Gast’s 1872 painting “American Progress.” It depicts Colombia as the “Spirit of the Frontier”, a white, blond, feminine figure, clad in a white gown, to move west in what was believed to be a divine mission: to “civilize” the Wild West. .

They board the train and include Elsa, the woman we saw from the opening of the chapter. James has another son, John, and they ride with James’ sister Claire and her niece Mary. They arrive in town on a train,

But Claire is decidedly disapproving of Elsa’s “disobedience”, moving to a different car and running into an unnecessary encounter with a businessman who sweetly talks to her.

Shia and Thomas meet James at the bar. He will continue to head north, but Shea and Thomas decide that they should cooperate and ride together. Now, Shia is haunted by memories of his past involving his wife, Helen.

One of the prostitutes talks the big game, understands Shia’s troubles and decides that she should call Helen instead. Well, she gets shocked and gets threats for her trouble.

The women and children arrive by train shortly after James appears in Ft. Worth, Texas, and proved that their leading-man ended up shooting the robber several times and duffing with pickpockets and the like.

However, it is his daughter, Elsa, who is the focus of a cold openness in the media – depicting Native Americans as scalding people, obviously – and who later picks up narration duties, leading to the plot.

The beats and character changes convey profound surprise at the landscape and era, if we’re being candid, in a distractingly overwritten way. This is Elsa’s story, technically, for better and for worse.

I think the idea of anyone other than the most likely candidate is the real focal point, but I’m not even sure how well the device works in practice because the show should stay about James anyway as all the interesting action takes place on him.

I can’t even say that I trust Sheridan’s development of female characters – someone tries to rape Elsa in the very first episode, and in a laughable way,

and she wipes it off so easily that it Clearly, Sheridan isn’t entirely sure how to actually tell Elsa’s story beyond risking it for cheap thrills and flirting with cowboys.
