The first “Mamma Mia” is from events from the past. Influenced was a present-day feature – remember how it was about unraveling the intricacies of youth Donna’s love life,
The film highlights ABBA hits such as “Waterloo,” ” Dancing Queen,” and of course, “Mamma Mia” as Sophie cements her relationship with her mother’s former bandmates and her mother tells her that three people could be his father.
The story is told through a series of flashbacks to Donna’s life and journey as the characters prepare for the hotel’s grand opening. There’s something so honest about the silliness of this film that despite the craziness it’s a pleasure to watch.
The grand reveal at the film’s finale is a cameo appearance by Cher as Sophie’s estranged grandmother. Cher’s reveal leads to an energetic finale of the musical and the presentation of “Super Trooper” that brings back the likes of Meryl Streep.
Although producers could have focused on a few more melodious voices, the songs by Lily James and Cher suffice for the entire cast. Audiences flock to the music, but they are ultimately rewarded with the boundless energy and emotion of the film.
